Giving your mind the attention and care it deserves is vital for your long-term health!

Since May is Mental Health Awareness month, take some time to check in on your mental health as well as the mental health of those you love. Poor mental health can lead to physical health issues and vice versa. Mental and physical health are deeply connected, so this May we’ve decided to explore this connection and offer some tips to help!

Tips for Better Mental & Physical Health Connection:

  • Get regular exercise – Small amounts of exercise add up and help boost your mood and improve your health overall. For instance, a short brisk 10-minute walk can turn your day around in terms of alertness, energy, and mood!

  • Regular meals & hydration – The key here is eating smaller meals more regularly. Also, a balanced diet including protein, essential fatty acids, complex carbs, vitamins, minerals, and plenty of water have been shown to improve brain development and function. In turn, the food we eat can prevent numerous mental health conditions like depression and dementia.

  • Prioritize your sleep – Try your best to stick to a sleep schedule and get enough sleep (7-8 hours a night). Limit your blue light exposure before bed too to get a more restful night’s sleep!

How to Seek Help (For Yourself or Someone Else):

  • Speak Up Early – Keep it simple: “I’m struggling” or “I’m not feeling like myself” is enough to start the conversation.

  • Reach Out to Trusted Support – Talk to a friend, family member, or your primary care, if for no other reason than to check in and make sure you’re ok.

  • Use Free, 24/7 Resources – Call or text 988 to connect with a trained counselor anytime—it's confidential and available nationwide.

  • Listen Without Judgment – If helping someone else, focus on being present and supportive rather than trying to fix everything.

  • Act Quickly if It’s Urgent – If someone is in immediate danger, call 911 or seek emergency care right away.

Remember, mental health is an essential part of overall well-being. Taking care of it requires ongoing attention, healthy habits, and support when needed. Small daily actions combined with awareness of when to seek help can significantly improve your quality of life!
