We’re embracing this time to raise awareness about the importance of managing cholesterol for your heart health! High cholesterol often has no symptoms, but it can lead to serious conditions like heart disease and stroke if not dealt with in time. This month, take a moment to learn how you can protect your heart by understanding and controlling your cholesterol levels.

Tips to Manage Cholesterol

  • Know Your Numbers: Cholesterol is essential for building cells, but like anything, too much of a good thing can pose problems. Aim to keep your total cholesterol below 200 mg/dL.

  • Understand the Types

    • LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) is the "bad" cholesterol that can build up in your arteries.

    • HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein) is the "good" cholesterol that helps remove LDL from your bloodstream.

  • Get Screened Regularly: Adults 20 and older should have their cholesterol checked about every 5 years, more if they have risk factors like diabetes or a family history of heart disease.

  • Adopt Heart-Healthy Habits

    • Eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.

    • Limit saturated fats, trans fats, and excess sugars.

    • Be physically active for at least 150 minutes each week.

    • Avoid tobacco and limit alcohol.

  • Talk to Your Healthcare Provider: If your cholesterol is high, your provider may recommend lifestyle changes or medications to help manage it.
