The “Movement Stacking” Trick

Building healthy habits does not need to feel overwhelming or time‑consuming. One simple way to increase your regular movement is through a little trick called “movement stacking”. By pairing a physical activity with something you already enjoy, the "movement stacking" technique makes the healthy habit feel natural and automatic. It not only helps with motivation to be more active, but helps enjoy fitness more as well!
How it works:
Choose an activity you do enjoy doing already such as listening to a podcast, watching a favorite show, enjoying an audiobook, or even cooking. Then, attach a movement to it. This could be stretching, light strength exercises, a short walk, or mobility work. Because your brain already associates the original activity with something pleasant, adding movement becomes easier and more sustainable.
Why it helps:
It reduces the mental barrier to starting exercise.
It turns passive moments into opportunities for well‑being.
It reinforces consistency by linking movement to something you already look forward to.
It encourages small, frequent bursts of activity that add up over time.
Try it this week:
Pick one routine you do daily and add a simple movement. Stretch during your favorite podcast, do calf raises while brushing your teeth, or take a short walk during a phone call. Small steps build strong habits, and movement stacking helps make those steps feel effortless!
