When it comes to your heart and brain, few meats are better than fish. Since we’re in the heart of fishing and salmon season, we thought we'd offer a few reasons why you should join in on the fishy fun. Even if fish isn’t your favorite, the Pacific Northwest offers a wide range of seafood options—each with unique flavors and health benefits. Think about adding a little more seafood to your diet and how it could positively impact your overall health.

Northwest Seafood Varieties & Their Benefits:

  • Wild Salmon (Chinook, Coho, Sockeye, Pink, Chum)

    • Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, wild salmon supports cardiovascular health, reduces inflammation, and has even been linked to better long-term cognitive function. It's also a great source of high-quality protein and vitamin D.

  • Steelhead Trout

    • Similar to salmon in taste and nutrition, steelhead trout is also high in omega-3s. Additionally, it offers B vitamins to help maintain energy levels and support your nervous system.

  • Pacific Halibut

    • Lean and mild in flavor, halibut provides essential nutrients like selenium, magnesium, and potassium. Try it as fish n’ chips, or grilled with rice and vegetables.

  • Black Cod

    • Known for its buttery texture, black cod helps with red blood cell formation and neurological function. Great baked, fried, or pan-seared.

  • Dungeness Crab

    • A local favorite for seafood lovers! It’s low in fat and high in zinc, which supports the immune system and healing of wounds. Great as a crab boil with corn, sausage, onion, and other vegetables.

  • PNW Shrimp (pink shrimp and spot prawns)

    • These small but nutrient-dense shellfish are high in protein and low in fat. They provide essential minerals like selenium and iodine, which support thyroid health and antioxidant defense. Great for those new to seafood and easily added to pasta, fajitas, or stir fries.

  • Pacific Northwest Calamari (Squid)

    • Locally harvested squid is a lean source of protein. Great for immune, antioxidant, and blood cell health. Grilled, fried, or sautéed, calamari can be an easy addition to your diet with a mild flavor that appeals to a wide range of tastes.
