Strength training offers many lifelong benefits for your overall health! Whether you use weights, resistance bands, or bodyweight exercises, strength workouts are great. They help maintain muscle mass, support bone density, and improve metabolic function. As we age, we’ll be especially grateful for an increased metabolism.

Why Strength Train:

  • Preserve muscle and strength: Regular resistance training slows muscle loss and keeps you physically capable for everyday life.

  • Boost metabolism: Muscle burns more calories at rest than fat, helping with weight management.

  • Strengthen bones: Weight-bearing exercises increase bone density and reduce the risk of osteoporosis later in life.

  • Improve balance and coordination: Reduces fall risk and enhances mobility; stronger toes and feet result in fewer falls.

  • Helps manage chronic conditions: Helps control symptoms of arthritis, diabetes, and heart disease.

How to Get Started:

Start with simple bodyweight exercises (squats, pushups, sit-ups, wall-sits). Aim for 10-15 reps per set as you start, then graduate up to resistance bands or weights. You can do fewer reps with weight or resistance, but be sure you’re challenged by the last few reps.

Pro tip:

Warm up with light cardio before lifting and consult a healthcare provider and possibly a trainer if you're new to strength training.
